Recommended Shops

This section is for people who might be travelling, and wondering what shops are in the area, or for people who don't know about shops in their own area. If you are looking for shops in the U.S. that sell cross stitch supplies, I found a great site called the Needlework Shop Locator that allows you to click on a region and find needlework shops in each state!

Click on the hyperjumps below to get to any particular state and its shops. If you have a store you like to visit, send me a note. I'll include the shop's name, address, phone and description. And if you see someone here who isn't in business anymore, or who has moved, please let me know that as well.

"I have been to Thistle Needleworks in CT, a small shop in Colorado, several in the Phoenix area, and a couple in Florida. While the Thistle Needleworks may be the largest in New England, and Attic Needleworks in the Phoenix area The Cross Stitch Cupboard in Florida has them all beat. It has a great selection but more importantly, it has the best staff of all the shops I have ever been to. I have found that in most of these shops that the ladies, while all very knowledgeable and helpful they seem to put on airs when you are not as informed as they are. The ladies in Florida are some of the nicest and most helpful I have ever met. I hated living in Florida passionately (too much humidity and too many bugs) but I was pretty devastated to be leaving my favorite shop. I pulled everything I had ever stitched out and had it framed or finished there because their work was so good and reasonably priced (They said that they would probably have to shut down when I left for lack of business-they're still there.) I still miss my favorite shop and may have to visit that place I hate so much just to go there. I hope someday you get a chance to go there. You'll love all the ladies!!!" -- Kim W.

THey will make a design for you from a picture or drawing, and even offer finish up service for projects that you can' seem to finish. They have a schedule for special events, a sofa to sit and sew on and are very friendly. This is the closest Cross-Stitch and Framing shop to the French Quarter, only 10 minutes away on the other side of the bridge. They have a whole wall of local and regional patterns, so if you are visiting the city and want a souvenier to stitch, this is the place! They carry many fine fabrics, particularly evenweaves, and a good selection of specialty fibers as well as DMC and Anchor. They are very happy to do mail order, and will also kit anything for you with full skeins of floss, full packs of beads, etc. My favorite part is the big table in the pattern room. You can go "sit & stitch" any time, and people are so friendly. I have learned so much just sitting there with stitchers more experienced than I who are always happy to teach me something new. -- Lynne Phelps-Smith

KNOTS N' NEEDLES
Benton Road
Bossier City, Louisiana

It is a family run business, but it is obviously a big family. They have a framing section, and will frame your work for you, or help you with doing it yourself. They are absolutely wonderful. A very large selection, and always very helpful. There has never been a time that I was in the store that I was not greeted and asked If I needed help finding something. If they do not have what you want, they will find/get it for you. When I left there last December, I had given them two pieces of my work that they were going to make into a sewing box and pin cushion for Christmas presents, and they forwarded them to my new address without receiving payment first, and then they only charged the exact amount for the postage - they asked for no more money. This is a great shop. --Delia

I literally stood in the doorway of this shop with my mouth open - you name the type of fabric, pattern, thread, sewing yardage, paint, stencil, frame, etc and they have it and if they don't they will get it for you. amazing people - they even have sent an envelope to me with just one skein of thread that i couldn't find out here - not even a problem - they also follow up seriously on back orders - you can order something and be absolutely positive that they will get it to you AS SOON AS IT COMES IN. They also will ship things on a monthly basis (snowmen of the month, santas of the month, etc.) and are really a delight to work with. --Lois Mouriski

I lived in Tulsa for 12 years and can say with a lot of enthusiasm that The Stitchworks is the friendliest, most helpful, and the largest cross stitch shop I have ever been in. I have lived in Minnesota, Wisconsin and now Calgary, Alberta and have not found a shop to equal their variety of patterns, fabrics, fibers, beads, buttons, jewelry and other needlework supplies!! The atmosphere is relaxed and helpful and the staff is knowledgeable about a variety of the needlearts. I can almost always find the pattern I am looking for; and if by chance they have just sold the last one, they are more than happy to special order. I am lucky they have a catalog, as I can't get to Tulsa very easily anymore. And recently they just started their own web page, making ordering easier that ever!! They also have framing and finishing ideas and I recently ordered bellpull hardware to finish a needlework piece for a needlework competition in Calgary. I have always been pleased with their speedy delivery, even to Canada!!

"Owner Diane Fisher is full of energy, enthusiasm, and very helpful...it is obvious that she loves her work. And the shop is full of wonderful samples and tons of supplies. Don't be in a hurry when you go to her shop...you'll want time to take it all in. East Petersburg is located north of the city of Lancaster on Route 72." -- Deb Bender

"Must tell you about how I learned about Diane's Design in East Petersburg, PA. I was surfing (which is how I found you the first time). I had put in "Danish Flower Thread" and up comes Diane's. Well, I grew up near there and the prose or syntax or something just seemed so familiar. I wrote a note in her guestbook, saying I had graduated from the local h.s. "long before cross stitch," and signed it "EllenAnne H. Falk." Well, lo and behold, Diane Miller Fisher wrote back and asked if the "H" stood for Hilkemeier ( a good SDak name). I went back to Lancaster County and found my Sunday School and HS classmate (1961) in her shop. She is an EGA certified teacher. The assortment of threads is incredible! Nary a piece of DMC. I cannot even name them all. And hardanger and bobbin lace and tatting and Battenberg and everything else you have ever dreamed about. She has achieved my fantasy and I am very proud of her." -- Ellen

"This shop is owned and run by Lynne Kilinski, my sister. She has been in business for about five years. She has classes twice a year and holds a needlework competition in October. For inspiration Lynne keeps a memory book of the past entries in the needlework competition, it is amazing to see what others have done. Even though I only get to visit once a year, I really enjoy wandering the shop because I'm always seeing something new to do. If you go there you will find that Lynne is very helpful in finding just what you need for that special project, from the pattern, thread, and fabric, to that just right frame.

A Stitch-N-Time has expanded recently. The additional space has given Lynne more display area for new products, an expanded framing area, and a class room. Lynne has increased her class schedules to include "sit and stitch" times. She even has a night for men only( ladies are always welcome). The shop has Monthly Temptations on e-mail. Just sign up and you will be notified of upcoming events, new books, and products that have come in. With the expanded store it is even more fun than before to wander around and find all the new things. Lynne, as always, is there to answer any questions you may have. A Stitch-N-Time just completed its 7th year in business. " --Kathleen Hall

"This shop is the best I have ever been in. The owner/manager, Carma Ott, and her staff are delightful women who will help you find a special pattern, make suggestions, answer questions, and give you all the time you want to look around. There are two very large rooms filled with hundreds of stitched models which are labeled with the name of the pattern and the number of the rack on which it can be found. This method made shopping so easy. There are approximately 20 large racks of pattern books, with special sections for Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving as well as theme areas -- lighthouses, kitchen and bath, flowers, duplicate stitch, animals, children, etc. they carry a variety of threads, buttons and beads and also have some really cute ready-made frames at a reasonable price. One area is dedicated to fabrics -- the extent of which I had never seen before -- and some kits are available. When you visit The Counting House, allow yourself about 2 hours to thoroughly look over the shop's contents (and to scratch the ears of Macy, the owner's adorable 12-year-old Yorkshire Terrier) and ask questions. If you are looking for a magnifier or a special lamp, you might find exactly what you are looking for in this shop. If you are visiting Myrtle Beach, the shop is about a 35 minutes drive south on Route 17 (either Business 17 or the old Route 17 -- they merge). You will be glad to have made the trip. The shop also has the nice ammenity of a very clean bathroom that is available to shoppers -- what a treat. For those of you who are famliar with The Strawberry Sampler in Chadds Ford, PA, this is a sister shop -- they are owned by sisters! On an historic note, The Counting House was the first counted cross stitch shop in the United States and was opened by Ginnie Thompson who brought the craft and its techniques to the U.S. from England. I guess it can be called the "grandmother" of all shops. They accept checks, Mastercard and Visa." -- Kimberley Yarnell Bierly

"This shop is a delight as is its owner, Julie. There are several small rooms that are just full of wonderful patterns, fabrics, a variety of flosses, stitched models, buttons and other accessories, and the usual array of hoops, needles and the like. I first became acquainted with this shop at The Spirit of Cross Stitch Festival in Valley Forge, PA and liked what I saw. I was pleased to be able to stop at the shop while on vacation in Vermont. The owner and her assistant are pleasant and outgoing and very willing to make suggestions and help a newcomer find what she is seeking. A lot of the leaflets were from Shepherd's Bush and similar folk art designers, but there were plenty of other charts from which to select. Julie produces a wonderful quarterly newsletter and I got on the mailing list just to keep posted on her new additions to the shop. "They carry imported Aida and linen cloth, DMC floss and pearl cottons, needles and stitching sundries plus several hundred pattens for cross stitch, hardanger, and needlepoint and some kits. Special orders are not a problem for them. They also have a frame shop attached to the stitching shop where they frame both stitching and other work. They have classes many times throughout the year, usually 1-2 a month and contests where their customers can compete with each other and show off their own work. One of the most fun classes is a Stitch All Night. This is held once a year, to give us all time to recover, and is keyed to a theme such as hardanger, Christmas, or another special technique. We all bring a snack, order in pizza and try to make it until morning. One of the nice things about their shop is how helpful they are. If you like a certain series of patterns, or designer, they let you know when something comes in you may like. They remember your preferences and show you similar new things to try. This extra 'small town helpfulness' is one of the things that make them special. You are not just their customer, you feel you're their friend as well. It's a great place to spend time." -- Sue Floyd

"Besides carrying cross stitch, hardanger and silk ribbon embroidery supplies, this shop also does framing. They have done a superb job of Earth Dancer and I stop in extra just to drool! They are very helpful and this place also kits all the needed specialty threads and beads for earthdancer. They especially do this for the beads because otherwise the proprietor told me the beads would just end up in some friendship bracelet, rather than the picture she got them in for." --Helen Bartel
