Count Your Stitches

"In Feb. 1995, I founded a cross stitch club in my community (Eldersburg MD) and we have been meeting twice a month for cross stitching and friendly conversation. We named our group "Count Your Stitches", and we meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesday of every month at 7 PM at Springfield State Hospital, Administration Building, Sykesville, MD. We are a very informal fun group. Some of our activities include having a Christmas cross stitch gift exchange and pot luck dinner, maintaining a cross stitch library, and enjoying each other's company while working on our individual current project. Our group is open to all cross stitchers and we post notices of upcoming meetings in the Carroll County Times and The Baltimore Sun. Interested stitchers can contact us at stitchme@juno.com."-- Dorothy Harris

Draper's Meadow Chapter of EGA

The group meets on the 4th Thursday of the month in the Community Room of the New River Valley Mall, Christiansburg, Va. We just finished a year long placemat project. Members made placemats with a different technique on each placemat. Some members chose to make a sampler. We are stitching Habitat for Humanity samplers for families that move into Habitat homes in the area and we will do a Group Correspondence course through EGA this fall. We plan to do an in depth study of samplers this year and to design our own sampler as part of the study. We are eager in increase our membership. Interested individuals can contact Jolene McNichols at (540)552-6350 or Caryl Gray at (540)951-1441 or cegray@vt.edu.

Elisabeth 1629 E-mail Group

I have recently purchased the kit for the Elisabeth 1629 sampler from the Scarlet Letter and would like to know of anyone who would like to join an email loop as a support group. Elisabeth is housed in the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge, England and was the oldest known signed and dated sampler until Jane Bostocke was discovered. It is a lovely band sampler with undulated floral, double running, and boxer bands.

Those of us who are now communicating on this project are gathering our kits, considering possible fabric and fiber changes, and sending bio info to be shared by the group. We will begin stitching in January, and I will propose a stitching schedule at that time.

Anyone interested in joining this group may contact me at lindarcox@aol.com and I will add your name to the list. -- Linda

Metro Stitchers

"We're a group in New York City who met each other through the internet. We've grown to about 45 on the email list. We have events usually about once a month and have various themes for the events. Sometimes we'll get together for brunch at a local restaurant and then head over to my place (right on Fifth Ave., and very centrally located for most of the stitchers) for an afternoon of stitching.

We have had events like New Project night where fabric was checked at the door to make sure you hadn't started yet, Finishing Night both to finish stitching a project and to learn how to finish a completed project that you might want to turn into a pillow or something, Potluck dinner night, Millenium events (many of us are working on a sampler for 2000), Tea and Dessert events, Pizza and Chocolate parties, Shopping events, and of course, just plain stitching nights. We also sometimes have unplanned Stitching Sundays where anyone is welcome to come by during certain hours and just stitch with others.

There are no fees. Usually I ask for everyone to either bring a dish or some munchies and many times we go to dinner afterwards (for those who want to). It's a varied group and people come from all walks of life. I think our youngest is about 11 and the oldest in their 60s.

It's a great bunch and many close friendships have been forged during the hours stitching together. To become a MetroStitcher, all you have to do is email me (chellyc@aol.com) and I'll put you on the mailing list." -- Chelly
