Selecting a new project, really, is about half of the fun. When I've decided I've been good enough to get to start something new, the fun begins. I pull out my plastic tote full of charts and kits, and thumb through them. I yank out a few that I've been thinking about. Then I put a few of those back. Then I might go look through my fabric stash and think about what projects could go on which pieces of linen. Then it's back over to the designs to have another look-see.
Ultimately, I usually decide to pick a project based on season of the year. This time of year I work on something wintery (like a snowman) or early-springy, like a Valentine's project, or something for Easter. My big push of birthdays and the holidays are over, so this project can be just for the fun of it. There isn't much preparation for anything going on (like Christmas), but I'm stuck inside because it's still so darn cold. It's a great time of year for something new.
Once in a while I start something huge, but the past few years, my projects have become smaller and easier to finish in the time I have to stitch. I did a lot more silk gauze this year (you should see the Prairie Schooler Santa I stitched on 40-ct. gauze!) This year, who knows? Probably some old designs, and some new ones, too. Some for the shop, some for friends and family. An ornament for my niece Claire, and a stocking for my brother-in-law Jordan. I hope 2004 brings for you many happy hours of needle and floss and fabric and relaxation. We all need it!
